Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan and a major financial center, has once again been listed as one of the least livable cities in the world. In the latest Global Livability Index 2023 by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Karachi ranked 169th out of 173 cities.
This means it is considered more livable than only a few cities that are facing significant poverty, such as Lagos, Algiers, Tripoli, and Damascus.The city, with a population of over 18 million people, performed poorly in all areas assessed, resulting in an overall score of 42.5, which is below average.
The index evaluated cities based on factors like post-Covid recovery, stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. The scores range from 1 to 100, with 1 representing extremely poor living conditions and 100 indicating the highest livability.
Karachi’s weakest performance was in the stability indicator, where it scored only 20. It received a score of 50 for healthcare, 75 for education, 51.8 for infrastructure, and 38.7 for culture.
Compared to the previous year’s index, Karachi’s livability has declined as it was ranked 136th out of 140 cities in that assessment.
