Emirates, the world’s largest international carrier, has issued a notice to passengers regarding potential interruptions in Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity services on certain flights. This disruption is attributed to a satellite issue that the airline has clarified is beyond its control.

The airline, renowned for its commitment to passenger experience, had announced in May 2023 that Emirates passengers across all classes of travel could access some form of complimentary connectivity upon signing up for Emirates Skywards. This enhancement resulted in an additional 30,000 Economy Class passengers enjoying complimentary onboard Wi-Fi every week.

Emirates’ passengers warmly welcomed this increased connectivity, with an average of 450,000 users per month. This marked a 30% increase in passenger use in 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year.

However, Emirates recently informed travelers about the possibility of Wi-Fi and mobile service disruptions on select A380 flights due to a satellite issue beyond its control. In a statement on its website, the airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and stated its intention to restore services promptly.

Emirates has made substantial investments in onboard connectivity, amounting to over Dh1.1 billion ($300 million) to date.

In addition to complimentary connectivity, Emirates passengers have the option to purchase Wi-Fi plans during their flights. The first package, priced at $2.99 to $5.99 depending on flight duration, allows passengers to use text-based communication services like WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Line, or Viber.

For those seeking internet access for the entire flight, the second Wi-Fi package is available at $9.99 to $19.99, varying according to flight duration.

It’s important to note that certain limitations apply due to bandwidth constraints and satellite data costs. As a result, media streaming and certain sync services may be restricted during the flight.
