Power Cement Limited (PCL), a prominent cement producer in Pakistan, has taken a significant stride towards sustainability with the recent signing of a 20-year term sheet agreement for a 9.6 MW wind power project. This initiative underscores PCL’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy solutions.
The signing ceremony, which took place on April 2, 2024, marks a milestone as PCL partners with Burj Solar, the developer of the project, and Orient Energy, the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor. Under the agreement, PCL will serve as the off-taker of electricity, ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for its operations.
The wind power project, structured under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, will feature two turbines, each with a rated capacity of 4.8 MW, capable of generating approximately 30 GWh of clean energy annually. With a goal to reduce around estimated 15,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year, while reducing PCL’s Grid dependency from 61% (Current) to 46% (Future) after successful operations of the project.
In 2020, the company underwent a significant technological upgrade, expanding its production capacity by installing a new line of 7,700 TPD from FLSmidth Denmark. This expansion brought PCL’s total capacity to 10,700 TPD, equipped with state-of-the-art efficiencies and the lowest production costs in comparison to market competitors. Notably, PCL’s manufacturing process adheres to eco-friendly standards, with emissions consistently meeting the stringent limits set by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Recognizing the global imperative to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly in industries like cement production responsible for around 7% of global emissions est., PCL has prioritized initiatives aimed at mitigating its environmental impact. 12 MW Waste Heat Recovery Generation (WHRG):
Since its launch in February 2020, the WHRG project has generated over 225 million KWh of clean energy, resulting in the avoidance of 82,289 tons of scope 2 emissions.
7 MW PV System:
Operational since August 2022, the PV system has generated approximately 15 million KWh of clean energy, leading to the avoidance of 5,671 tons of scope 2 emissions.
