PTA has provided an important update on Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as the company works towards launching in Pakistan.
During a briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, the PTA revealed that Starlink had submitted its license application on February 24, 2022. The company is now coordinating with relevant regulatory bodies to meet the necessary requirements for operating in Pakistan.
For Starlink to move forward, it must first register with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and complete the process with the Pakistan Single Window (PSW). The PTA emphasized that licensing cannot proceed until these initial steps and government clearances are finalized.
Additionally, the PTA confirmed that Starlink has assured compliance with all national policies and regulations. The authority remains committed to a thorough review process to ensure the service aligns with Pakistan’s regulatory framework.
Another player, Shanghai Space Technology, is also preparing to enter the Pakistani market, potentially boosting internet infrastructure and technological advancements. This marks an exciting time for the country’s digital growth.
The Standing Committee also raised questions about the oversight of space-related technologies and has invited SUPARCO, Pakistan’s space research organization, for discussions on developing a regulatory framework for such initiatives.
Elon Musk has previously expressed interest in bringing Starlink to Pakistan, stating that the launch is awaiting government approval. Many view Starlink’s potential arrival as a game-changer for internet connectivity in remote areas of the country, promising faster and more reliable services.
