The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology recently met to discuss the registration and licensing of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in Pakistan and their impact on the country’s IT sector.
The chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) informed the committee that more than 30,000 VPNs have been registered since December 2010. Starting in January 2025, the PTA plans to issue licenses for VPN usage. This step aims to regulate VPNs while supporting IT sector growth.
During the meeting, concerns were raised about frequent internet disruptions, often attributed to national security measures. These disruptions have affected 99% of IT companies, creating challenges for businesses and the sector’s overall growth.
The PTA acknowledged the issue and emphasized its commitment to resolving these problems. A special cell has been established to address internet disruption concerns and ensure a stable online environment for the IT sector.
Pakistan’s IT sector is currently growing at an impressive rate of 30%, and officials believe that proper regulation of VPNs can further strengthen the industry. Licensed VPNs are expected to enhance security, improve business operations, and boost confidence among international clients.
The Senate committee highlighted the need for a balanced approach that considers both security and the needs of the growing IT industry. By addressing these challenges, the government aims to create an environment that fosters innovation and sustains the sector’s rapid growth.
