PTA has unveiled a new regulatory framework to bring VPN services under its licensing system. This move is aimed at ensuring better regulation of VPN usage in the country and addressing the challenges posed by unregistered services.
Under this plan, the PTA will now issue licenses to local companies interested in providing VPN services. The licensing fee for nationwide coverage has been set at Rs300,000, while provincial-level services will cost Rs100,000. Each license will be valid for 15 years, with the option for renewal upon expiry.
This new system is designed to integrate VPN providers into Pakistan’s regulatory structure, similar to other telecom services such as internet, cellular, and vehicle tracking services.
By formalizing the process, the PTA aims to enable authorities to monitor VPN traffic more effectively while allowing users the freedom to choose their service providers.
IT experts have welcomed the move, emphasizing its potential to benefit Pakistan’s freelance industry, which comprises millions of individuals, including many women.
Local VPN providers will now have an opportunity to legally cater to this growing segment by adhering to the country’s regulatory requirements.
In addition to paying the licensing fee, providers will be required to comply with PTA guidelines, ensuring secure and reliable services for users.
Meanwhile, the government will leverage this framework to enhance cybersecurity by monitoring VPN usage without compromising user experience.
The introduction of this licensing plan marks a significant step toward modernizing Pakistan’s IT landscape and supporting its expanding digital economy.
