Rawalpindi is set to open its first underground cabling-based walking street on Bank Road on February 26. This Rs1.2 billion project covers a one-kilometer stretch from Murree Road to Police Station Road and features popular brand outlets.
As part of the project, all overhead cables have been removed, and a new sewage system has been installed. The area has also been upgraded with footpaths, benches, modern streetlights, and food cabins, making it more pedestrian-friendly.
Bank Road has now been divided into four pedestrian-only sections, where electric vehicles will provide a free shuttle service for visitors. This initiative is designed to beautify the Saddar commercial area and make it more accessible for shoppers and tourists.
The walking street is part of a larger city development plan to improve Rawalpindi’s infrastructure. Future projects include expanding underground cabling to other areas and making key intersections on Mall Road signal-free to ease traffic congestion.
This transformation aims to create a modern, well-organized shopping district in the city while maintaining its historic charm.
