Romania and Bulgaria are set to fully join the Schengen Area by land borders starting January 1, 2025, marking a historic moment for both nations. This decision paves the way for easier travel and trade across Europe for Schengen visa holders, with both countries already having air and sea access since March 2024.
Agreement Reached for Full Membership
Romania’s Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, confirmed the development following high-level discussions between interior ministers from Austria, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. This breakthrough agreement resolves years of delays and ensures that both countries move forward together as a package deal for full Schengen membership.
During his visit to Budapest, Ciolacu emphasized that after 13 years of effort, Romania and Bulgaria are finally achieving full Schengen integration. Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, also expressed confidence, stating both nations have met all necessary criteria for land border inclusion.
Austria Lifts Objections
One of the key hurdles to this decision was Austria’s previous veto, citing concerns over irregular migration. However, during a meeting held on November 22, Austria officially lifted its objections. This shift ensures that the last procedural steps can be completed during the EU Council meeting in December.
European leaders, including Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, have welcomed the progress. Johansson stated that this decision strengthens the Schengen Area and its vision of a borderless Europe.
