According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), tropical cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea has gained strength and is now classified as a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS).
Fortunately, there is currently no immediate danger to any coastal areas in the country.
The PMD stated, “The Cyclonic Storm (CS) ‘BIPARJOY’ has moved northward over the past 12 hours, intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS), and is now located near Latitude 12.8°N & Longitude 66.1°E, approximately 1,340 km south of Karachi.”
The Met Office reported that the center of the cyclone is experiencing maximum sustained surface winds of 90 to 100 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 120 kilometers per hour.
Due to favorable environmental conditions such as high sea surface temperatures of 30°C to 32°C, low vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence, the cyclone is expected to further intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) later today. It will continue moving in a north/northwest direction, as mentioned by the PMD.
The PMD’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the system and will provide further updates accordingly.
Yesterday, the PMD issued a warning about the potential formation of a tropical cyclone in the Southeast Arabian Sea.
In their alert, the PMD stated, “The low-pressure area (LPA) over Southeast Arabian Sea has intensified into a Depression (strong LPA) and is located near Latitude 11.5 N & Longitude 66.0 E, approximately 1,500 km south of Karachi.”
