In the early 1970s, Dr. Syed Adibul Hasan Rizvi, a distinguished Pakistani surgeon and philanthropist, laid the foundation for the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) with a visionary goal: to provide state-of-the-art medical care to everyone, irrespective of their financial means. At its inception, SIUT operated from an eight-bed ward in the Burns Unit of Civil Hospital Karachi. Over five decades, under Dr. Rizvi’s leadership, it has burgeoned into a monumental 2000-bed hospital with nine functional units scattered across Sindh.
In 2005, recognizing the pressing need for expanded medical facilities, SIUT Trust was established as a charitable entity, dedicated to providing medical services and financial assistance to those in the advanced stages of renal ailments. The institution’s commitment to offering healthcare with dignity, entirely free of cost, became even more entrenched with the formation of this trust.
Located in proximity to the Civil Hospital of Karachi, SIUT’s central hub is the Dewan Farooq Medical Complex, a testament to the generosity of philanthropists like Dewan Farooq, whose contribution facilitated the construction of this complex. The commitment to free medical care and the rejection of any form of discrimination or commercialization underscore SIUT’s foundational principles.
Recent years have witnessed further expansion, notably with the establishment of the Hanifa Sulaiman Dawood Oncology Centre, made possible by another substantial philanthropic donation. This addition represents a significant milestone for SIUT, extending its capabilities to address various cancers, including bladder, kidney, prostate, adrenal, testicular, and post-transplant malignancies.
