Prominent Pakistani human rights activist and lawyer, Jibran Nasir, has returned home safely on Friday, a day after he was abducted by unidentified armed men in Karachi. The incident sparked widespread outcry in the country and raised concerns about the safety of human rights defenders.

Nasir and his wife were intercepted by armed men in two vehicles while on their way home. After his release, Nasir took to Twitter to express his gratitude to those who called for his immediate release and pledged to continue his struggle for the rights of Pakistanis. However, he did not provide details about the circumstances of his release or who held him in custody.

Known for his outspoken criticism of human rights violations in Pakistan, Nasir has represented victims in several high-profile cases and has been vocal about issues such as the mass arrests of leaders from former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party and their trial in military courts following recent protests.

Nasir’s abduction follows a pattern of journalists and activists being targeted in similar incidents, leading to suspicions of involvement by Pakistan’s intelligence services, although concrete evidence is often lacking. The incident has ignited social media outrage, with journalists, activists, and ordinary Pakistanis expressing their support for Nasir and demanding better protection for human rights defenders.

The safe return of Jibran Nasir is a relief, but the incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by activists and the need for the Pakistani government to prioritize the safety and security of those working to protect human rights in the country.
