Back in 2005, in Turkey, a group of Kurds got fined for holding signs with letters like Q and W during a New Year’s celebration. These letters were not allowed because Turkey wanted to use a new writing system that didn’t have those letters. The new system was meant to modernize the language.
Even though these letters weren’t important in most languages, they were important in Kurdish. This rule made life difficult for the Kurdish people, who were a minority in Turkey.
Surprisingly, companies from Western countries found ways to use these banned letters, especially X, in their ads. They didn’t get in trouble for it.
But after 84 years, in 2013, things changed. The Turkish Prime Minister allowed people to use Q, W, and X. This made the Kurdish community and people who liked the full alphabet happy.
