The weather service warned fishermen and the shipping industry from travelling to the area on Wednesday after spotting early indications of a storm developing in the southeast Bay of Bengal.
On May 9, a cyclone is likely to form in the southeast Bay of Bengal, according to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department. Its route will be predicted in the next days.
The system is dubbed Cyclone Mocha, as suggested by Yemen, and it stems from the Yemeni city of Mocha (or Mokha), which is situated on the Red Sea coast. The port city, which has a long history of dealing in coffee, is also where the renowned Mocha coffee got its name.
This cyclone was given a name in accordance with a WMO directive, which mandates that each cyclone be given a name in order to prevent confusion when several weather systems are active at the same time.
