The 2023 elections in Turkey saw a remarkable achievement as the voter turnout reached an unprecedented level, surpassing 88 percent. This historic milestone reflects the strong enthusiasm and active involvement of the Turkish people in shaping their country’s future.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emerged as the winner of the re-election, according to unofficial results reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency. With 99 percent of the ballot boxes counted in the run-off, Erdogan secured 52.07 percent of the vote, while his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu received 47.93 percent. In the first round held on May 14, Erdogan had received 49.52 percent of the vote, with Kilicdaroglu receiving 44.88 percent.
During the first round, Sinan Ogan, a nationalist candidate, received 5.17 percent of the vote and later endorsed Erdogan for the second round. It is worth noting that an impressive 88.84 percent of Turkey’s eligible voters, out of a total of 64 million, exercised their right to vote in the first round, demonstrating a significant level of voter participation.
