Wasim Akram, the legendary cricketer, has been appointed as one of Australia’s 54 multicultural ambassadors for a two-year term. This announcement was made through an official press release by Cricket Australia. Alongside Akram, other notable ambassadors include India’s Ravi Shastri and former cricketers Russell Arnold from Sri Lanka and Aminul Islam from Bangladesh.
These ambassadors hail from diverse backgrounds and possess experience in various fields such as government, business, sports, media, and community work. The Ambassador Program is a crucial part of Australian Cricket’s Multicultural Action Plan, which aims to unite prominent figures from different sectors to promote diversity and encourage positive changes within both the sport and the wider community.
Australia’s Test opener Usman Khawaja, spinner Fawad Ahmed, pacer Scott Boland, and former women’s cricketers Lisa Sthalekar and Mel Jones are also included in this prestigious ambassador program. These individuals represent various sectors including the public and private sectors, community groups, media, and cricket itself.
The ambassadors will support the Multicultural Action Plan’s five key focus areas: participation, high performance, people and representation, dialogue and involvement, and event and experience. Their roles involve encouraging greater participation in cricket, improving performance levels, ensuring diverse representation, fostering dialogue and engagement, and enhancing the overall experience of cricket events.
