The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a notable achievement on Tuesday, revealing that the recently concluded World Cup in India has set a new attendance record, making it the most-watched ICC event ever. Over 1.2 million spectators witnessed the tournament live, marking a significant milestone.
According to the ICC, a total of 1,250,307 fans attended the six-week event in India, where Australia emerged as world champions for the sixth time. This attendance figure surpasses the previous record set during the 2015 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand, which had 1,016,420 spectators. In comparison, the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales had 752,000 attendees.
The anticipation of breaking the attendance record was met when the “one-millionth patron attended the group stage match between South Africa and Afghanistan in Ahmedabad.” The record reached its pinnacle with over 90,000 fans attending the final between India and Australia at the same Ahmedabad stadium.
In addition to the impressive attendance figures, the ICC highlighted that the event in India also broke several broadcast and digital viewership records, underlining the global popularity of the tournament.
The World Cup concluded with Australia defeating India in the final, denying the hosts a victory on their home soil. Led by Pat Cummins, Australia secured their sixth ODI title, capping off a remarkable two-year period during which they clinched all three ICC trophies—the T20 World Cup, World Test Championship, and ODI World Cup—solidifying their position as the leading cricketing nation.
