X, previously known as Twitter, has introduced a new subscription method in which new users in the Philippines and New Zealand are required to pay approximately $0.75 and $0.85 annually to access basic features such as posting on the platform.
Those who choose not to pay will be limited to a “read-only” version, allowing them to read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts but not post content.
This move is aimed at reducing spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform. Existing users in these countries are not affected by this change.
The platform’s ownership shifted to billionaire Elon Musk last year, and he has implemented various controversial changes to address issues like fake accounts and spammers.
Musk even suggested imposing a nominal fee on all users to tackle these problems, which received mixed reactions from users worldwide.
